Correlation between nutrition and cancer was discovered back in the 19th century. In the meantime, many studies have been conducted. The results were positive – nutrition does play a vital role when it comes to both the cancer prevention and treatment. Modern medicine and its doctors constantly encourage people, especially cancer patients, to stick to a good and fitting diet.
This article will tell you all about how diets can help battle cancer. Also, I’ll mention a bit about what a good diet is and list some available foods to beat cancer.
First, let’s address some of the more general points.
People who don’t eat well are more prone to illnesses than those who eat healthy. Whether it’s eating too much, too little, or eating unhealthy, it affects your health directly. Your diet dictates your health, and that is a fact. For some, diet affects the well-being more, whereas some never even feel consequences. To sum it up – a good nutrition diet is important.
Now, when it comes to cancer patients, scientists say that an unhealthy lifestyle and bad nutrition are one of the main causes of cancer, besides genetics. Physical inactivity and obesity have a 30% to 35% correlation to cancer deaths. An inadequate diet can weaken the endocrine and immune system, making it less resistant to infections, carcinogens, and other factors.
So, when a person with cancer eats unhealthy, it’s pretty clear that it’s not helping them heal. Integrating a balanced diet with foods to beat cancer not only helps ease the side effects but also increases the chance of cancer remission. But, more on that later.
The protocol for beating cancer with alternative methods depends highly on the cancer stage. The more advanced the tumor, the more aggressive the treatment needs to be.
For Stages I to III cancer, it’s possible to use some lighter methods. One of these is the Bill Henderson protocol. This therapy method is focused solely on the diet and foods to beat cancer. The goal is to create an alkaline environment, in which the microbes cannot grow or multiply.
Probably the most famous alternative cancer treatment out there is the Gerson therapy. Patients that opt for this method have to follow a strict and very detailed diet. This diet consists mostly of organic vegetable and fruit juices.
For Stage IV cancer, more dynamic therapy is suggested. Cellect Budwig protocol is an example. This protocol uses vegetable juices, laetrile, Cellect nutritional powder, and electromedicine. There’s also the High pH therapy, which uses cesium chloride in its treatment. Actually, there are many diet-based protocols that exist right now. It’s important to find one that suits you the most.
Thankfully, there are more than a few means of treatment to choose from nowadays. Patients who did not find the conventional methods helpful, or they simply think that they are too invasive, they have the option to use alternative medicine. And even when they do that, they have a variety of alternative methods to choose from. Diet treatments and using foods to beat cancer is just one of those. That’s where patient’s personal opinions come into play. Everyone can choose what suits them the most. Of course, we must not ignore the fact that conventional medicine has the best results when it comes to cancer treatment. Especially now, with the technological and scientific rise, treatments are getting less invasive and more effective. According to a recent study, the 5-year survival rate has increased from 50 to 66 percent in the last 40 years. Along with the increased awareness of the importance of healthy living and eating, it seems as though we are looking at even more progress in the future.
As I have previously mentioned, there’s a strong connection between nutrition and cancer susceptibility. High-fat diets most commonly lead to colon, breast and prostate cancer. And again, a good diet helps strengthen your immune system, which then protects you from infections, bacteria, carcinogens, etc.
So, what is a good diet, anyway?
There are many categories of foods.
The first category is foods that can cause cancer (usually fatty acids from processed food), and foods that help cancer cells grow (sugar, flour, dairy, etc.). Then there is meat, which has its own category: foods that divert the immune system from destroying cancer cells. There are also foods that interfere with the traditional cancer treatment (alcohol, coffee, chlorine). And last, but definitely not the least, are the foods to beat cancer. These foods help treat cancer by either stopping cancer cell growth, slowing it down, or something else. Such foods are various seedy fruit (cranberries, grapes, strawberries), vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, carrots), as well as some nuts and herbs.
So, naturally, a good cancer diet should consist of the last category – foods to beat cancer.
However, some anti-cancer foods also have negative effects.
That’s why the diet has to be carefully composed, so there is no damage. More on that in the next paragraph.
As I said, it’s not that easy drawing a line between ‘healthy’ and ‘unhealthy’ foods. Some foods do help with cancer, but they create additional problems. An example for this is grapes, which are essentially nourishing cancer cells with glucose while killing them at the same time. It’s also important to note that the effects of the food depend highly on their preparation.
Plus, expert opinions are divided when it comes to foods to beat cancer. That’s why there are so many different diets out there. They range from more flexible to quite rigorous.
Some say that it’s best to just avoid meat and some go to the extreme lengths and say you shouldn’t eat anything besides raw vegetables.
Moreover, there are a lot of different cancer forms. Not every healthy food is good for the patient, and neither is every unhealthy food bad for him/her.
The straight-away answer is yes.
There is scientific proof to support the claim.
I’ll mention it again – the correlations between obesity and cancer susceptibility is 30 to 35 percent. Also, according to Cancer Research UK, being overweight significantly increases the chances of getting 13 types of cancer. When trying to lose weight, avoid processed and sugary food and red meat. The best foods to consume when trying to lose weight are high-protein foods, beans, vegetables, and fish.
Now, speaking of foods to beat cancer, results are as follows:
- Red carotene, which is found in tomatoes and a few other red foods, reduces prostate cancer symptoms by 40%. Curcumin and pomegranate prevent prostate cancer metastasis.
- Vitamin D has proven to be helpful with many forms of cancer, especially breast cancer. Carotenoids prevent it from returning.
- With liver cancer, Vitamin K has been successful in stopping cancer progression in 6 out of 30 cases.
- Some good bacteria have proven to be good for colon cancer.
- As I mentioned earlier, grape seeds contain nutrients that kill cancer cells.
And there are many more that help beat cancer one way or another. The ones I listed have more noticeable benefits, and there’s scientific evidence of their anti-cancer effects.
This diet may as well be called the ‘perfect’ cancer diet. I am using this term loosely because there can be no perfect diet. Every person is different, and so is their cancer.
But, the reason this diet is deemed ‘perfect’ is that it takes all the popular cancer dietary advice and integrates it into one diet.
Many experts say meat is very detrimental to cancer patients. Also, there’s no need to point out again how extremely beneficial vegetables and fruits are. The ‘raw’ part comes from the idea that cooking foods can actually take away from their value. All the proteins, vitamins, and other important elements get destroyed in the process.
This diet has been approved by many relevant groups and associations, such as the Hippocrates Institute, the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center, etc. Even American Cancer Society advocates the ideas of the Raw Vegan diet.
Even though I have already talked about specific ingredients and foods to beat cancer, I want to address the nutrients that slow cancer down. Here’s a list of foods that contain these nutrients:
- Strawberries, goji berries, cranberries and other seedy fruit. Vitamins C and A and gallic acid that comes from berries help boost the immune system.
- Lemons, oranges, etc. Vitamin C in lemons helps target damaging cells.
- Walnuts, pecans, sunflower seeds, etc. Nuts and seeds contain a lot of minerals, fiber, and omega-3 acids. The recommended amount is 2 tablespoons a day.
- Broccoli, cauliflower, artichoke and other cruciferous vegetables. These contain phytochemical nutrients that are related to cancer prevention.
- Spinach, kale, arugula, etc. Leafy green veggies are full of both antioxidants and vitamins C and A.
